How to Design Stunning Annual Flower Containers

Article written by: Ella Lindberg, Annual and Perennial Department Manager, CCNP

There’s nothing quite like a beautiful container garden filled with vibrant annual flowers to bring life to your outdoor space. Whether you’re sprucing up your patio, porch, or balcony, creating the perfect container is easier than you might think! Let’s chat about how to put together a gorgeous arrangement using some of my favorite plants, potting soil, and fertilizers.

The “Thriller, Filler, Spiller” Method

One of the best tricks for designing a well-balanced container is using the “thriller, filler, spiller” approach:

Thriller: This is your statement piece—the tall, eye-catching plant that draws attention. Some of my favorites include Cyperus papyrus Prince Tut, or King Tut (pictured), Dracaena Spikes, and Canna Lilies.

Filler: These are the plants that add volume and texture, making your container look lush and full. I love using Coleus, Marigolds, or Celosia (pictured)

Spiller: These trailing beauties soften the edges of your container and add movement. You can’t go wrong with Vinca vine, Sweet Potato vine, and trailing Lobelia (pictured)

My Go-To Soil and Fertilizer

Starting with the right soil makes all the difference! I always recommend Fox Farm’s Happy Frog Potting Soil because it provides the perfect balance of drainage and moisture retention.

And don’t forget about feeding your plants! To keep them blooming all season long, I suggest using Fox Farm’s Tiger Bloom Liquid Plant Food or Ferti-lome’s Blooming & Rooting Soluble Plant Food every other watering. These products are both game changers for strong roots and non-stop flowers.

Pro Tips for a Gorgeous Container Garden

  • Pick the Right Pot: Make sure your container has drainage holes so excess water can escape.
  • Water Smart: Containers dry out quicker than garden beds, so check your soil often and water as needed.
  • Keep It Fresh: Regularly deadheading spent flowers keeps your container looking its best and encourages more blooms.
  • Give It a Spin: If your container is in partial sun, rotate it occasionally for even growth.
