Caring for Your Amaryllis
Article written by: Eagle Crest Staff

Amaryllis are popular & festive houseplants with massive 6-10 inch trumpet shaped flowers & 1-2 foot tall stalks. They bloom mid-winter & are prized for indoor visual interest. They make great gifts!
Buy the largest bulb you can since that means more flowers. Check for intact brown, papery layers. Healthy bulbs will be firm & dry.
Plant amaryllis bulbs in containers about 1 inch larger in diameter than that of the bulb. The pot should have a hole for drainage and be deep enough for root development. Plant the bulb so that one half of the bulb is above the surface of the potting soil.
Water the bulb thoroughly, once planted. You can give them an occasional drink of water, but they don’t need much to grow – don’t overdo it.
Place in a warm sunny location. Turn regularly to keep stems from leaning toward the light source. Once it begins to bloom, move from direct light to allow the color to last longer.
