The world as we experience it visually comes to us through the realm of color.

Research has shown colors speak to you. RED-passion, courage; YELLOW-joy, happiness; BLUE-calm, imagination; GREEN-harmony, nature; ORANGE-fun, enthusiasm; PURPLE-devotion, peace; WHITE-purity, innocence; PINK-love, sweetness.
Colors have an effect on how people feel. Colors on the right hand side of the color wheel are considered warm colors (yellow, purple, red); colors on the left side are considered cool colors (green, blue, violet).
Colors that look good together are said to be in harmony. Colors opposite on the color wheel are complementary and look good when used together. Examples – yellow & purple, orange & blue. For analogous harmony, use any three colors next to each other on the color wheel; example, orange, yellow orange, and yellow. A triadic harmony can be achieved by combining three colors that are equal distance apart, example-yellow, red, and blue.

So with this information, you can use these color tricks to make your garden work. To make an outdoor seating area look cooler in the summer, plant blues, lavenders, soft pastels. To warm an area use hot colors such as reds, hot pinks, orange.
